Date: 1944 - Inscription: One cent - Questions: Error? Variety?

I was looking at some 1944S Lincoln wheat backs and noticed a difference in the size of the date and the location of the mint mark also varied on its location being either closer to the 9&4 in the date or further away from the 9&4 is this something that is an error or normal for older coins dates and mint marks to wander depending on who placed the mint on the coin?

There is no error that I know of that could cause this. The minting process back then was just melting it and using a hand tool to make the coins. They probably didn't have identical dies, and some dies may have been handcarved by the same person at different times. There was no computer tech to solve this. This is probably just a thing with old coins

I was thinking along the line of the 1960 small and large date variations ,were those dies produced the same way as in 44 ? Thanks for looking and the input,is there a possibility this could be included in the same genera

You have at least 2 error coins there. The one on the left is clearly an RPM, check them out at Wexlers under RPM varieties. Then select wheat pennies, and then select your 1944s, you'll see 2 of your pennies there. The 3rd penny in your photos looks like it's one of the ones shown in John Wexler's lists of errors on that coin. Great pennies. Keep on hunting.
