Most of the states of the northern and western region of Africa are now free independent nations i.e., Benin, Senegai, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Togo, Niger, Guinea-Bissau, but until recently much of the region was under French and British rule. These holed coins circulated in the British colonies of Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Gold Coast (Ghana). They all carry the six-sided (hexagram) star, a crown, and the name of the British Monarch. Some were minted in aluminum, some in copper-nickel, and bronze. The denominations, one-tenth, one-half, and one penny, are clearly marked on the coins.
