The beautiful coin in the picture comes from eBay seller wybrit and is in uncirculated condition with very pleasant gold-green toning. At one time Wybrit had this coin at auction starting at $450 US dollars. That is a lot of money, but it is a lot of coin. It is certified by PCGS, the premier numismatic grading service.
Here are some typical values for coins that look like the picture on this page:
SIXPENCE 1838 TO 1880:
worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $45
well preserved: $180
fully uncirculated: $500
SIXPENCE 1881 TO 1887:
worn: $15 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $30
well preserved: $120
fully uncirculated: $250
There are some 'better dates' that command better value than most, and you might have one of those better dates. The better dates are:
1848: $200 in average circulated condition
1854: $600 average circulated
1862: $300 average circulated
1863: $200 average circulated
CoinQuest thanks wybrit for use of their nice coin photo.
