India was under British influence until 1947. Starting in 1862 and continuing for 80 years, Great Britain issued copper coinage for India in denominations as follows:
1/12 anna (1 pie)
1/2 pice (1/8 anna)
1/4 anna
1/2 anna
There are also 2 anna coins and 1/4, 1/2, and 1 rupee coins, but these are made of silver and are not covered here. After 1942 other anna coins were minted as well, and some pre-1942 coins were minted in gold and silver. Again only copper coins with the reigning monarch and wreathed denomination are covered by this page.
With one notable exception, shown on this CoinQuest page, all these coins feature the reigning British monarch on the front, with a wreath-encircled denomination on the back.
The monarchs during this time were:
Victoria Queen and Empress
Edward VII King and Emperor
George V King and Emperor
George VI King and Emperor
Once you have the denomination and monarch of your coin, use the listings below to get approximate catalog values. As always on CoinQuest, apply the concepts shown on our Important Terminology page to convert catalog values to actual buy and sell values.

As a final note, if you have one of these coins that looks extra special, that is, is completely or nearly uncirculated and has good eye appeal, it may be a special proof issue or restrike made especially for collectors. These coins are generally worth more than the values shown above. Seek out a knowledgeable collector or a reliable coin dealer to do an in-person appraisal of your coin.
