Before Nazi Germany ruined the reputation of the swastika, it was a Hindu good luck symbol, similar to a four-leaf clover, horse shoe and wishbone. Check out this Hindu token [Press Here] for comparison. The Excelsior Shoe Company in Portsmouth, Ohio USA used the swastika on the back of its merchant tokens. They made several variants, as detailed on this SageVenture web page. Steve, who requested this appraisal, has one version of the token which does not bear the swastika, but sports a nifty lion and unicorn design.
All the patterns are worth about the same, although there are far more swastika tokens than lion and unicorn. Approximate catalog values run like this:
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $10
well preserved: $20
fully uncirculated: $50
These catalog values are for tokens without problems such as scratches, stains, spots, cleanings, nicks, gouges, and the like. Please read our Important Terminology page to properly interpret catalog values.
