The horseman and dragon is usually identified with St. George, a Roman Catholic saint with ties to other religions. The same, or similar, figure also appears on the crest of Moscow and on Russian coins, like the one here.
The coin in our picture comes from Jencek Historical Enterprises in San Mateo, California. It is a great coin in great condition and with no problems like stains, scratches, cleanings, or other types of damage. CoinQuest thanks JHE for use of their coin image.
This is a valuable coin. The catalogs quote strong prices, as follows:
worn: $50 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $200
well preserved (like our photo): $400
Actual buy and sell values will be lower than these catalog prices above, as explained on our Terminology page.
As with all valuable coins, one must be wary of counterfeits. They are all over the place -- even moreso today as crooks get more and more access to inexpensive technology. The Russian Numismatic Resource, Kopek.ws, reports a fake 4 kopek as shown below, side-by-side with a genuine piece. You can make out minor variations from coin to coin. Be sure you have a genuine example.
