Zeeland (Zeelandia, Zeland, Zelandia, Zealand) is in the south western corner of the Netherlands. The lion and waves in a crowned shield is a prominent symbol of Zeeland. You see this symbol on several coins from the Dutch East India Company (with a VOC annotation), shown at this CoinQuest link.
The denominations at the time were duit and stuiver, with 8 duit in one stuiver. In general, duit coins were made of copper and stuiver coins were made of silver. There is, however, a silver duit minted from 1725 to 1788 which is quite valuable. A gold half duit was minted with dates 1753 and 1755. This page applies only to copper duits with the large ZEE LAN DIA (not VOC) printed on the reverse side.
