That is a Hei-Tiki on the back of this half penny coin from New Zealand. One theory of the origin of the hei-tiki suggests a connection with Tiki, the first man in South Pacific legend. Small hei-tiki charms are found throughout the region, and a popular on modern coins as well. Tiki statues are large; hei-tiki statues are small and resemble a human embryo.
These are modern coins and are not worth very much. Dates after 1952 have Queen Elizabeth instead of King George. 1942 is the good date, cataloging as follows:
HALF PENNY DATED 1942
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $30
fully uncirculated: $200
All other dates are worth one-tenth of these figures.
