These old silver dollars are quite scarce and are highly sought by collectors. If you have a well preserved coin with only a little wear, like the coin in the picture, it is a very valuable coin. Many specimens are either well worn, or have been damaged by cleaning, both of which lower price dramatically. Here are some typical catalog values:
COMMON DATE SL DOLLARS
worn: $250 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $400
well preserved: $600
fully uncirculated: $2200
To reach catalog values shown above, the coin may have wear, but it cannot have damage. Damage includes scratches, stains, spots, nicks, gouges, and cleaning.
NEVER CLEAN A COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE.
The 'common date' values above apply to most of this series. But there are some break-the-bank dates and mint marks that are worth much more. The values below are for coins in average circulated condition:
BETTER DATE SL DOLLARS
1848: $700 average circulated

1851: $15000

1854: $3000

1859S: $800
1861: $1400
1862: $1400
1863: $1200
1864: $700

As always, and especially in recent times, one must be careful of counterfeits of valuable coins. Go to this CoinQuest page [PRESS HERE] for a convincing fake.
If you have an undamaged seated dollar in better than average circulated condition, you should have it authenticated, graded, and encapsulated by one of the following professional services: PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG. Look these up on the Internet. Do not use other services.
