Spain was influential in the Philippines from the time of Ferdinand Magellan (1521) to the Spanish-American War (1896). A portrait of Queen Isabella II shows on the 10, 20 and 40 centimos coinage from 1864 to 1868. Similar portraits and inscriptions appear on the 50 centimos pieces of the era, as well as the peso denominations. This page applies only to 10, 20, and 40 centimos.
The inscription on the reverse, e.g., '20 Cs DE Po' means '20 centimos of a peso' or '20 one-hundredths of a peso.' These old coins are interesting pieces of history, but they are difficult to find with little wear and good eye appeal. Coins dated 1868 are much more common than other dates, because millions were minted during the years 1886 to 1898 with that date.
The listings below show approximate catalog values for coins dated 1868. If you have a specimen with an earlier date, 1865 to 1867, multiply these values by five. If your coin is dated 1864, multiply by 10.
