Hi Stumpy -- The date on your silver thaler is 1818, shown in Roman numerals (MDCCCXVIII), and commemorates the constitution of the old German state of Bavaria (BAVARIE). Maximilian IV reigned as Maximilian I Joseph (MAXIMILIANUS IOSEPHUS), King of Bavaria, from 1806 to 1825. The coin in our picture comes from Wolfgang Rittig in Schwelm, Germany, and CoinQuest thanks this respected dealer for use of their coin photo.
Rittig's coin is in excellent condition, and that drives the price up. Any collector would be proud to add such a nice looking specimen to his or her collection.
This particular thaler is somewhat more common than others of the location and period. Typical catalog values are:
worn: $30 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $75
well preserved: $120
fully uncirculated: $270
Use our Terminology page to convert these values to actual buy and sell values.
