If your coin looks like the one in our picture (yikes!), it is worth essentially zero. The stains and damage is so bad on this coin, all but a few fringe collectors would consider it.
Typical catalog values for coins without problems run like this:
COMMON DATES (all dates except better dates below):
worn: $2 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $7
well preserved: $15
fully uncirculated: $30
There are two 'better dates' as follows. The values shown are for coins in well preserved condition
BETTER DATES:
1896: $40 well preserved
1909: $30
By the way, when I was a coin dealer, one my collector customers eagerly sought out coins with problems (like the one in the picture). He asked me explicitly, all the time, 'Got any problem coins?' One thing is for sure, this specialty collector bought all his coins at bargain basement levels!
