Use kitco.com for current gold price. The value changes every day. Look it up now. You will need it to evaluate these coins.
The old German State of Prussia issued a gold 10 and 20 mark coins:
10 mark: 19 mm diameter, 0.1152 ounces of gold
20 mark: 23 mm diameter, 0.2305 ounces of gold
A good formula to give an approximate retail price for this coin is to multiply the gold weight by the current price of gold to get its base value (or bullion value, BV) and then add a collector premium based on the condition of the coin, as shown below.
If, for instance, gold is selling at $1300 US dollars per troy ounce, BV for for a 20 mark coin would be: BV = 0.2305 * 1300 = $300 US dollars. If you have a fully uncirculated coin, you can add $50 collector premium to get an estimate of retail price, as follows:
PRUSSIA 10 AND 20 MARKS:
worn: BV
average circulated: BV
well preserved: BV + $30
fully uncirculated: BV + $50
These prices apply to all coins regardless of date, except:
10 MARK COINS ONLY:
1892: collector premium $100 worn, $500 well preserved
1894: collector premium $150 worn, $800 well preserved
1895: collector premium $100 worn, $500 well preserved
The collector premiums added to BV apply only to coins without problems. Problems include nicks, scratches, stains, spots, and cleanings.
DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE
If you were selling this coin to a coin dealer, he or she would probably pay around 70 to 80 percent of the prices shown. The difference is the dealer's margin, which keeps the dealership solvent.
