Valerio sent us this picture of his coin. As best we can tell, it is a 1 kopek coin from Russia, during the reign of Peter I (Peter the Great). It is in excellent condition.
This coin has created a small stir around CoinQuest, because we have had a hard time identifying and evaluating it. Usually we validate catalog values we publish by comparing them to equivalent coins for sale on the Internet. The trouble is, we cannot find one example of Valerio's coin online. That probably means it is an extra rare one, and our catalog value estimate may be low.
As best we can tell, this is Krause Mishler number KM-163, a one kopek coin from Russia. The KM catalog lists values as follows:
worn: $180 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $900
well preserved: $1800
We would call Valerio's coin 'well preserved,' so the $1800 figure prevails. Very nice, Valerio!
Just to be sure, we have contacted the experts at Russian Coins and asked them to apply their expertise. Check back to this page to see what they say.
