Medieval Germany Kaufbeuren Thaler 1542 to 1548
Kaufbeuren is a German city in southwest Bavaria. It became a free imperial city in 1268 and was subsumed into Bavaria in 1803. King Charles (Carolvs) V authorized coins starting in 1540. There are several variations of this coin, including, for instance, the alternate spelling Karolvs) in our picture and half-thaler issues.
The coin in our picture comes from Heritage Auctions where it sold recently for about $400 US dollars to a collector of medieval coinage. CoinQuest thanks Heritage for use of their coin photo.
