These coins can be quite valuable because not many of them were made. As always with British coins, the reigning king or queen appears on the front, so your coin may look different than our picture: Victoria's portrait may be replaced by those of Edward VII or George V. The values below are very approximate.
These coins contain silver, so they are always worth their silver content, even if heavily worn or damaged. But the numismatic (coin collector) value is much greater than the silver value.
25 CENTS, VICTORIA, EDWARD: 0.173 troy ounces silver
25 CENTS, GEORGE: 0.150 ounces silver
50 CENTS, VICTORIA, EDWARD: 0.346 ounces silver
50 CENTS, GEORGE: 0.300 ounces silver
To compute the silver value, multiply the weight by the current price of silver. If, for instance, silver is selling at $25 US dollars per troy ounce and your Canadian 50 cent coin shows George V, the silver value is $25 x 0.30 = $7.50. Be sure to look up the current value of silver (e.g., see kitco.com).

As always, with expensive coins, you must realize that counterfeits exist. The picture to the right shows one obvious copy, and one that is not so obvious. Never buy an expensive coin from someone you do not implicitly trust. To build up trust, complete several inexpensive deals and look closely at the background of the seller. Don't get stung.
Be sure you understand what catalog means. Use our Terminology page to fully understand what catalog value means. Catalog values are inflated values. They make a coin look more valuable than it really is.
