The War was over and peace celebrations prevailed throughout the British Empire. King George V and Queen Mary issued many different commemorative medals, and this is one example.
Medal collecting is becoming more and more popular as the Internet exposes their grandeur and beauty to more and more collectors. Unlike coins, which must be designed and sculpted to support mass production of vast quantities, medals can carry strong and artistic designs. The example in our picture comes from respected eBay seller Medals-Reunited. A typical retail value of such a piece runs between $10 and $20 US dollars. The stains on the front work against value. Without them, this piece is in excellent condition and would probably bring twice those numbers. Approximately:
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $10
well preserved: $30
fully uncirculated: $50
If you have such a medal to sell, figure a dealer would pay about one-half retail value. The mark-up allows the dealer to stay in business.
CoinQuest thanks Medals Reunited for use of their image.
