Amazing coin, sir or madam. The words 'Leopold' and 'Hvngariae' reveal its origins. King Leopold of Austria ruled the Austria-Hungary empire from 1657 to 1705, and he minted coins with his likeness in several different denominations, notably krajczars and thalers.
Leopold was known as The Hogmouth and this facial feature seems to show up in his coinage. The various coins have Leopold's profile on one side, and different patterns on the other. The smaller krajczar denominations have Madonna and Child (Mary and Jesus) on the reverse, while the larger thaler denominations have the double-headed eagle of the Byzantine Empire. Our secondary picture shows a 6 krajczar piece, indicated by the Roman numerals VI on the Leopold side.
Before addressing values of these neat old coins, I want to point out that our primary picture of the magnificent Leopold thaler comes from one of our favorite web sites ForumAncientCoins.com. It is part of the member Tibsi collection. The Forum often grants us copyright release on hard-to-find coins, for which CoinQuest is very grateful.
All the values below are for problem-free, nice-looking coins. The thaler from Tibsi is truly special. You do not often see old thalers that look this nice. It is very, very well preserved. If your coin has scratches, stains, spots, nicks, gouges, or it has been cleaned, the actual values will be much, much less. You will see from our listings below that the primary factor in value is wear; all dates have the same or similar values.
