Modern, post-1948, gold sovereigns and half sovereigns are worth their weight in gold. A collector might pay a little above raw gold value (say $20 to $50) if the coin is perfectly, absolutely uncirculated, like the example in our picture.
SOVEREIGNS: 22 mm diameter, 0.2354 troy ounces gold
HALF SOVEREIGNS: 17 mm diameter, 0.1177 troy ounces gold
To compute the value, first find the current price of gold. Go to kitco.com to find the 'spot' price for one troy ounce. Today that is $1610 US dollars, but tomorrow it will be different. Look it up. Second, multiply the value by 0.2354 or 0.1177 for sovereigns or half sovereigns, respectively. For today, that is $1610 x 0.2354 = $379 for a sovereign.
If you want to sell your coin to a dealer, he or she will give you less than the 'spot' price. The mark-up keeps the dealership solvent.
