Coins make great magic props. Everybody knows what they are, and they are easily palmed and concealed. It is a perfect combination for the magician.
Magicians use real coins sometimes, but they prefer magic tokens like the one in Steve's collection. Magic tokens are usually lighter than regular coins, and are sized and fluted for easy palming.
Look on eBay and enter 'magic token.' You will see many varieties. An aspiring token collector could assemble a nice set of intriguing examples. And it would not cost too much, either. They are made of base metal and generally sell in the neighborhood of $5 to $15.
