Morocco 1/4, 1/2, 1 Rial (2 1/2, 5, 10 Dirhams) dated 1299 to 1336 1881 to 1917

Morocco 1/4, 1/2, 1 Rial (2 1/2, 5, 10 Dirhams) dated 1299 to 1336 1881 to 1917

The date on many Moroccan coins is an Islamic Hejira (Hijri, Hijra, Hijrah) date. These dates are annotated using the abbreviation AH (Anno Hegirae, marking Mohammed's migration from Mecca to Medina), starting around 622 AD and factoring in that Islamic calendars use lunar years with 354 days, not solar years with 365 days.

The coin in our picture is a 1/2 rial (5 dirhams) coin dated AH1321, or 1902AD. There are older coins and more recent coins with similar, but not identical, patterns. They have AH dates ranging from 1299 to 1336. Here are some typical catalog values. All are silver coins, so they are never worth less than the value of silver they contain.
