Ethiopia 1 Cent, 5, 10, 25, and 50 Cents 1977
According to CoinFactsWiki.com, Ethiopia underwent a revolution in 1974, with a military council (the Derg) deposing King Haile Selassie. The country underwent years of insurrection and famine until the collapse of the Mengistu regime in 1991. Despite radical changes in government structure, Ethiopia continued with two currency denominations: cents and birr.
The obverse (heads side) of Ethiopian cent denomination coins features a roaring lion with the Ethiopian Era date below in Ethiopic numerals (see Ethiopian Calendar). The reverse sides change with denomination. Our main picture shows a 25 cent coin which features a man and woman celebrating the victory of socialism in Ethiopia. Other themes include oxen (1 cent), soldier (5 cents), antelope (10 cents), and a multi-person victory party (50 cents).
As to value, these coins are all made of non-precious metal and carry low value. Fully uncirculated specimens with good eye appeal attract collector interest (hey, that is a neat lion!) and collectors will pay a few US dollars each to add these coins to their collections.
