Modern Irish coinage is big on animals. Different denominations carry different animals, from rabbit, to dog, to bull, to fish, and, for this one, to horse. It would be fun to assemble a collection of Irish animal coins. Why not try it?
These coins are affordable as well. This page is about half crowns with the horse. They were made in silver until 1950. After that they were made in copper-nickel.
BEFORE 1950: 0.341 troy ounces silver
AFTER 1950: no silver content
If you have a silver coin, it cannot be worth less than its silver value. Look up the current price of silver (see web sites such as kitco.com) and multiply by 0.341. That is the minimum value for your coin, even if in totally worn or damaged condition.
