These are BIG coins from the old German State of Hannover (Hannover was absorbed into Prussia in 1866). The doppel (2) thalers contain over one ounce of silver. The smaller thalers contain about half an ounce. Both double and single thalers show king Georg V on the front, with the spiffy unicorn and lion design on the back. There are other thalers with Georg, but this page applies only to the unicorn and lion ones.
Our picture comes from Dirk Loebbers in Wettringen, Germany. The coin is in beautiful shape and commands a high price. If the coin were more worn, or had problems such as cleaning, spots, stains, or scratches, it would be worth much less. CoinQuest thanks Dirk Loebbers for use of his coin photo.
