Great Britain Farthing 1895 to 1901

Great Britain Farthing 1895 to 1901

Queen Victoria's reign was so long, from 1837 to 1901, the Royal Mint used three different portraits of the Queen on the front of their coins. This one, from 1895 to 1901, is called Old Head. The reverse shows Britannia, British symbol of virtue and integrity.

There is a wonderful web site that tells you most everything there is to know about farthings. It is called (what else?) AboutFarthings, and CoinQuest thanks them for use of their coin image.

The catalog values for this series of farthings runs like this for all dates:

worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $6
fully uncirculated: $35

Use our Important Terminology page to convert these catalog values to actual buy and sell values.

The coin in our picture is very well preserved, but it is not fully uncirculated. Its catalog value would probably be $25, and it might sell retail to a collector for $20, and a dealer might buy it wholesale for $10.
