This doppelthaler (2 thalers or 3 1/2 gulden) comes from the old German State of Hesse-Darmstadt. It is a big, bold, beautiful coin and the one in our picture comes from Dirk Loebbers in Wettringen, Germany.
Simon indicates that his coin is mounted in jewelry and has been cleaned. This, unfortunately, wipes away all numismatic (coin collecting) value and he is left with only silver bullion value. There are 1.07 troy ounces of silver in this coin, which, at today's silver price, is worth about $35 US dollars. Tomorrow the price of silver will be different. Look it up.
In contrast, Loebbers coin in the picture has no problems and therefore carries collector value. Here is what the catalogs say about this coin:
worn: $100 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $160
well preserved (like the picture): $280
fully uncirculated: $450
The 1839 date is a little more rare than the other dates. If you have an 1839, multiply the values above by two.
As always on CoinQuest, we have supplied inflated catalog values. To convert catalog to actual value, apply the concepts on our Terminology page.
CoinQuest thanks Dirk Loebbers for use of his coin image. It is a beauty!
