An image of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba (1475-1526), founder of Nicaragua, appears on the obverse ('heads' side) of these coins. A sunlit mountain range appears on the reverse. There are other Nicaraguan coins with different patterns, but this page applies only to those with patterns like the one in our picture.
This pattern was used on different coins with different denominations and metals, including brass, copper-nickel, steel, and silver. Here is a run-down of approximate catalog values. Be sure to read our Important Terminology page to understand how to interpret these catalog values.
