These are nice coins with Bernardo O'Higgins, a Chilean independence leader who, together with Jose de San Marti?n, freed Chile from Spanish rule in the Chilean War of Independence.
20 CENTAVOS: Copper, 1942 to 1953
50 CENTAVOS: Copper, 1942 only
1 PESO: Copper, 1942 to 1954
1 PESO: Aluminum, 1954 to 1958
Since these are modern coins made of non-precious metals, values are low. The catalogs report:
MOST COINS, EXCEPT THOSE CALLED OUT BELOW:
worn: less than $1 US dollar
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $5
The 20 centavos in our picture is in superb condition. It would probably sell retail to a collector for $2 or so. This illustrates the difference between catalog value and actual buy and sell values, as explained on our Terminology page. Gregory's coin has scratches, corrosion, and a hole. This damage renders the coin valueless to collectors.
COINS WITH VALUES DIFFERENT THAN ABOVE:
50 centavos 1942: $4 average circulated, $25 fully uncirculated
1 peso 1942 to 1945: $1 average circulated, $12 fully uncirculted
1 peso 1946 and 1947: $1 average circulated, $18 fully uncirculated
1 peso 1954 to 1958 in aluminum: $2 fully uncirculated
