West Africa (Federation) 50 Francs 1972 to Date

The catalog tells me the unusual fish/lamprey pattern is a Taku, a symbol of prosperity, and this symbol appears on all coins from the newly federated States of West Africa. The 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 franc coins are made of nickel and brass, so these coins are worth face value. There are other coins, notably 500 francs and 5000 francs, which are made of silver and gold, so their value fluctuates with the precious metal market.

Since the 50 francs are modern coins made of non-precious metal, they are worth face value. Collectors, however, will pay small premiums (a few US dollars) to get a nice-looking example for their collections.
