Leopold II was King of Belgium from 1865 to 1909. His likeness appears on Belgian coinage throughout his reign. These coins, the 50 centimes and the 1 and 2 francs between 1904 and 1909, carry his likeness on the front and a wreath on the back. This page applies only to Leopold II coins with a wreath on the back.
Catalog values run like this:
50 CENTIMES (0.067 troy ounces of silver)
worn: $3
average circulated: $8
well preserved: $25
fully uncirculated: $65
*for 50 centimes dated 1909, see below
1 FRANC (0.134 troy ounces of silver)
worn: $10
average circulated: $15
well preserved: $45
fully uncirculated: $100
2 FRANCS (0.268 troy ounces of silver)
worn: $12
average circulated: $20
well preserved: $50
fully uncirculated: $80
2 francs dated 1904 are worth a slight bit more than these values
*There is a special case with 1909 50 centimes. If a 1909 coin has (1) DER BELGEN in the inscriptions (not DES BELGES) and (2) has medal alignment, its values go like this:
50 CENTIMES SPECIAL 1909:
worn: $10
average circulated: $15
well preserved: $50
fully uncirculated: $120
To determine if your coin has medal alignment, hold it between thumb and forefinger with the portrait straight up, your thumb on the bottom and forefinger on top of the coin. Now turn the coin from left to right, like turning the pages of a book. If the wreath appears right-side-up, you have medal alignment. Most coins show the wreath up-side-down.
As always with CoinQuest, these are catalog values which must be accurately interpreted using the concepts on our Terminology page.
