Turkey 25, 50, 100, 250, and 500 Kurush 1876 to 1918

Turkey 25, 50, 100, 250, and 500 Kurush 1876 to 1918

These are beautiful gold coins from Turkey from the reigns of Abdul Hamid II, AH1293 to AH1327 (equivalent Western datea are 1876AD to 1909AD) and Muhammad V, AH1327 to AH1336 (equivalent Western dates are 1909AD to 1918AD). The 25, 50, 100, 250, and 500 kurush denominations are all minted in gold and have the tughra with reshat to the right and crossed branches beneath. The other side has branches encircling the inscriptions with a star at the top. There are other Turkish gold coins dated 1293 and 1327 with different patterns. This page applies only to coins with the pattern shown.

Each coin carries the date the sultan started his reign (1293 for Abdul Hamid II and 1327 for Muhammad V) and the year into the reign of the minting (see below).

To find value, first compute the basic gold value using kitco.com as the source of current gold price. Multiply by:

25 KURUSH: 14 mm diameter, 0.053 troy ounces gold
50 KURUSH: 18 mm diameter, 0.106 ounces gold
100 KURUSH: 22 mm diameter, 0.213 ounces
250 KURUSH: 26 mm diameter, 0.532 ounces
500 KURUSH smaller coins: 17.54g, 0.517 ounces gold
500 KURUSH larger coins: 36.08g, 1.034 ounces

Note the some of the 500 kurush have essentially the same gold content as the 250 kurush, while others have twice as much gold as the 250. The difference comes in the year of Muhammad V's reign. To find the year, look in our secondary picture which shows a reign year of 4.

For example, gold today is $1720 US dollars per troy ounce (look it up, it changes every day). If you have a 100 kurush, the basic value due to gold content is then 1720 x 0.213 = $366.

If your coin is in superb shape, you may add further value, over and above the base gold value, due to demand from coin collectors.
