CoinQuest thanks Goldberg Auctions for the great picture of this great coin from the old German State of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. The coin in Goldberg's picture has a special reverse side commemorating the 25th year of King Wilhelm's reign. The secondary picture show the normal reverse side for these coins. There is a beautiful gold 10 thaler with this same design. This page applies only to the silver thalers and double thalers.
We can quote some approximate catalog values for you, but with these old coins, especially the large 2 thalers, each coin stands on its own merits. Catalog values are always approximate guides, but for coins like this they are *very* approximate. I have seen these sold at auction for half and twice the values shown below.
THALER (32 mm diameter)
worn: $35 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $50
well preserved: $100
fully uncirculated: $225
thalers dated 1851 are more rare and catalog at twice these values or more
DOUBLE THALER (39 mm diameter)
worn: $100 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $200
well preserved: $300
fully uncirculated: $550
double thalers dated 1845, 1851, adn 1852 catalog around $1000 in uncirculated condition
the special 25th anniversary coin dated 1856 (shown in our primary picture) is somewhat more common and worth about half the values above
