Token US Trade Gustavus Lindenmueller 1862 to 1864
During the American Civil War, the government was pretty busy abolishing slavery. So they did not have much time for more mundane activities such as minting coins.
Private citizens took it upon themselves to create tokens for commerce, and so US Civil War Tokens were born. You can see our page on CWTs at this CoinQuest link. They are avidly collected today.
Gustavus Lindenmueller was a barkeeper in New York. His colorful tokens apparently caught the attention of Congress, and they promptly outlawed private minting. Too bad. Some of those Civil War Tokens are really cool!
