US Auctori Plebis 1787

Token US Auctori Plebis 1787

AUCTORI PLEBIS means 'by the authority of the people,' and INDEP ET LIBER means 'independence and liberty.' These were strong feelings among most of the American colonists years ago (but not so much today ... political commentary added at no charge), and these tokens were minted by an unknown resident of England for use (probably) in America. They are avidly sought by collectors of early American colonial coins.

The coin in our picture comes from Stack's Bowers Galleries where it sold at auction for $460 US dollars.

The value of these tokens depends on condition, as shown in this listing of approximate catalog values:

worn: $100 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $450
well preserved: $1000
fully uncirculated: $8000

Remember that these are catalog values and must be adjusted to obtain actual buy and sell values. To do the adjustments, see our Terminology page.

CoinQuest thanks Stack's Bowers for use of their coin photo.
