Pittsburg Landing is a river landing on the west bank of the Tennessee River in Hardin County. Tennessee. It was named for 'Pitts' Tucker who operated a tavern at the site in the years preceding the Civil War. The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was a major battle in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, fought April 6 and 7, 1862. A Union army under Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant had moved deep into Tennessee and was encamped principally at Pittsburg Landing. Confederate forces under Generals Albert Sidney Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard launched a surprise attack on Grant there. The Confederates achieved considerable success on the first day, but were ultimately defeated on the second day.
This is a rare token from the Civil War. Token collectors will pay handsomely for this token, as evidenced by the token in our picture from Heritage Auctions. It sold for $891 US dollars. Tokens in worse condition would be worth much less.
As always, CoinQuest thanks Heritage for use of their image. It is a beautiful and interesting item.
