Spain was influential in the Philippines from the early 1500s to the late 1800s, and their coinage reflected that influence. The 50 centimos coins described here showed Queen Isabel between 1865 and 1868, and King Alfonso thereafter.
Values of these coins vary quite a bit, with a few special dated commanding high premiums and some extra-low premiums. First we list the catalog values for *average date* coins, then cite the special dates.
COINS WITH ISABEL: 0.376 troy ounces silver
COINS WITH ALFONSO: 0.348 troy ounces silver
MOST DATES:
worn: $30 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $80
well preserved: $150
fully uncirculated: $450
DATES WITH LOWER VALUE THAN ABOVE
1868: $15 in average circulated condition
1881 to 1883: $25 average circulated
1885: $15
The 1868 date is the common (and of low value) for a good reason. They had the highest original mintage of over 400,000 coins, and between 1869 and 1874, about 200,000 additional coins were struck, all with the date of 1868.
Coins dated 1885 are likewise common for similar reasons.
DATES WITH HIGHER VALUE THAN ABOVE
1866: $600 in average circulated condition
1867: $700
1880: $300
1884: $400
1887: $700
Remember that these are catalog values and must be adjusted downward to obtain actual buy and sell values. See our Important Terminology page for an explanation
