Australia Fenwick Brothers 1852 to 1884

Token Australia Fenwick Brothers 1852 to 1884

According to Museum Victoria in Australia: Orlando Fenwick arrived in Melbourne in November 1852, bringing goods out from England with him to found a drapery business. With his brother Pascoe he established many businesses locations, and, in 1857, he moved to King Street. The Fenwick Brothers issued two tokens bearing their address, and the government flagstaff, giving prospective customers a clear indication of where to find the store.

These old tokens are highly collectible today. One in superb condition sold for $800 US dollars in this Goldberg auction. The token in our picture is from Kapaan and Mades in Marl, Germany where it is on sale for 100 euros, about $130 US dollars.

Catalog values, approximately, are:

worn: $50 US dollars
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $400
fully uncirculated: $1000

As always, the concepts on our Terminology page apply.

CoinQuest thanks Kapaan and Mades for use of their coin photo.
