Netherlands Utrecht Duit 1710 to 1794

Utrecht is the smallest province in the Netherlands. It was instrumental in signing of the Union of Utrecht treaty against Spain, forming the foundation for the Dutch Republic and later the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Utrecht issued duit coinage in copper and silver between 1710 and 1724. These early pieces lacked the lion supporters on either side of the shield. Then, in 1739 until 1794, the supporters were added to copper and silver pieces, and gold pieces were also minted. Values depend on the mintage metal and, although most dates are of equal value, a few special dates and variations add collector premium. If you have a nice looking Utrecht duit of copper, silver, or gold, seek out a knowledgeable collector or coin dealer for an in-person appraisal. The silver duit in our picture comes from Euromunt Goes in Goes, the Netherlands, where it is on sale for 90 euros (about $120 US dollars). This is a good price for such a nice looking, problem-free coin with almost no wear. If the coin were scratched, stained, or had been cleaned, the value would be much lower.
