Great Britain Victoria Diamond Anniversary 1837

Medal Great Britain Victoria Diamond Anniversary 1837

Speaking of wisdom, the Bible says 'Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.' (Proverbs 3:16). This is the translation of the inscription on this beautiful medal LONGI TVDO DIERVM IN DEXTERA EIVS ET IN SINISTRA GLORIA. The other inscription says that Queen 'Victoria successfully completed the sixtieth year of her reign, 20 June, 1897' or VICTORIA ANNVM REGNI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN.MDCCCXCVII. Thanks to CoinPeople for these translations.

This is a popular medal from the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign in 1897. It comes in two sizes, large and small, and in three compositions, copper, silver, and gold.

Chard gives the critical parameters for these medals. The large gold medal measures a whopping 56 cm in diameter and contains 2.74 troy ounces of gold, so it is worth a bunch of money at today's gold prices. To find out how much, multiply the current price of gold (found at kitco.com) by 2.74. If, for instance, gold is trading at $1200 per troy ounce, the base value of the large gold medal is 1200 x 2.74 = $3288 US dollars. You must look up the price of gold. It changes every day.

Silver is the same deal. The large medal contains over 2 troy ounces. See the Chard page and do the multiplication.

If you are buying one of these medals from a picture BE SURE TO UNDERSTAND IF THE MEDAL IS LARGE OR SMALL. Small medals have about one-tenth the precious metal.

In addition to the value due to precious metal, there is a certain collector premium to add based on the wear and eye appeal of the medal. Here are some approximate values:

almost uncirculated: add $1000
