So who says you gotta collect coins to be a coin collector? Ha! Why not collect tokens? It's fun, and it's cheaper, too.
The big word for a person who collects coins is numismatist. A person who collects tokens, medals, medallions, and similar coin-like objects is called an exonumismatist. So there is even an official name for token collectors.
The token in our main picture is a Moscow Metro (train) system token from 1955. With that much age, these tokens start to pick up value.
MOSCOW METRO TOKEN, OLD OR UNUSUAL (like our main picture)
worn: $2 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $10
well preserved: $20
fully uncirculated: $35
Modern tokens are more modestly priced:
MOSCOW METRO TOKEN, MODERN OR COMMON
worn: less than $1 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $5
fully uncirculated: $10
The two tokens in our secondary picture are modern. The lackluster piece on the left would struggle to reach worn price levels, but the super green plastic dazzler would certainly qualify for uncirculated prices.
Now I ask you, wouldn't it be fun to build a collection of nice-looking transit system tokens?
