Germany Frankfurt 1, 3, and 6 Kreuzer, 1/2, 1 and 2 Gulden, and 2 Thaler 1838 to 1857

Frankfurt is one of the largest cities in Germany. It started minting its own coins in 1423 and continued to do so until 1866 when it was absorbed into the old German State of Prussia. Many silver coins from Franfurt use the same pattern for different denominations. The imperial eagle appears on one side and a wreathed denomination appears on the other. Size, of course, varies with denomination, with 1 kreuzer the smallest coin and 2 thaler the largest.

Note that Frankfurt also minted coins with several other patterns during this time period, including a large 2 thaler with a river scene of the city replacing the imperial eagle. This coin is shown in our secondary picture below. However, the values listed on this page apply only to the eagle/wreath coins as shown in the main picture. The city scene coins are worth, in general, somewhat more.

The listings below give approximate catalog values for each denomination. All the dates are roughly equal in value.

The coin in our picture main picture (with the eagle) comes from Wolfgang Rittig in Schwelm, Germany. It is a beautiful coin in excellent condition and is selling for 345 euros (about $450 US dollars), which is a good price for such a nice coin. If Rittig or other reputable dealer were buying a coin like this from a collector, he would probably pay about one-half the retail price. Such markups are common and allow the dealership to stay in business.

Here are the catalog values. As always, you should learn how to interpret them by studying our Terminology page.
