These copper coins from the Chihli (Zhili) Province of China have the dragon on the front and Chinese symbols on the back. Pei Yang indicates the mint and is sometimes referred to as the Pei Yang Arsenal mint in Tientsin (Tianjin). The catalogs show relatively low values for these copper coins (the corresponding silver coins are much more valuable), but I would hold on to your coin because the price will very likely rise sharply. CoinQuest believes Chinese coins will be the next big star in coin collecting. The main thing holding them back is the rampant counterfeiting now going on.
Here are the current values called out in the Standard Catalog. The 10 cash coin is by far the most common.
5 CASH
worn: $4 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $35
well preserved: $50
10 CASH
worn: $1 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $5
20 CASH
worn: $15 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $40
well preserved: $70
As with all Chinese coins, we present above only very approximate values and we do not account for subtle variations in special coins that can be worth more. If you have a nice-looking PEI YANG dragon cash coin, seek out a knowledgeable collector or coin dealer and get an in-person appraisal.
