German New Guinea, now called Papua New Guinea, occupies the eastern half of the Island of New Guinea and is now under Australian control. In 1894 and 1895 the Germans issued beautiful copper, silver, and gold coinage with a dazzling bird of paradise on the front and a wreathed denomination on the back.
The breathtaking coin in our picture, a silver 5 mark, comes from Goldberg Coins and Collectibles in Los Angeles where it sold for more than $7000 US dollars at auction. The coin is in coveted MS65 condition, almost a perfect coin. CoinQuest thanks Goldbergs for use of their photo.
These are valuable coins. Not many were made, few survive today, and collectors like their exotic touch. Our listings below are for problem-free coins without scatches, stains, gouges, cleanings, nicks, corrosion, and the like. Consult our Important Terminology page to convert these catalog values to actual buy and sell values.
DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE.
