These coins from Thailand come in 1/2, 1, 5, and 10 satang denominations. The 1/2 and 1 satangs are made of bronze, and the 5 and 1 satangs are made of nickel. Dating them is a challenge for Westerners because they use Buddhist Era (BE) dates which are 543 years ahead of Western (Gregorian) dates, or Rattanakosin Era (RS) dates which are 1781 years behind Western dates. The system of numerals is also much different.
Approximate sizes are:
1/2 SATANG: bronze 19 mm diameter
1 SATANG: bronze 22 mm diameter
5 SATANG: nickel 17 mm diameter
10 SATANG: nickel 19 mm diameter
Most of these are low-value coins with catalog values that run like this for both bronze and nickel coins:
BE DATED COINS
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $4
fully uncirculated: $8
The more valuable coins are the ones with the RS dates. These have three numeric characters instead of four. If you have an RS coin, figure improved catalog values like this:
RS DATED COINS
worn: $4 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $6
well preserved: $40
fully uncirculated: $120
Obivously, if you think you might have a valuable coin, you should seek out a knowledgeable collector or coin dealer for an in-person appraisal.
