China (Empire) Hu Poo Tael 1903

China (Empire) Hu Poo Tael 1903

Chinese coins are hot! And this one is hottest of the hot. In 2011 a genuine Hu Poo Tael sold at auction for $271,400 US dollars. Wow! But, the chances that Chris has a genuine Hu Poo Tael are one in a million. There are oodles of fakes, like this one on Flickr.

This article in Coin World shows a $200,000 specimen sold by Baldwin's. The pictures on this page come from Heritage Auctions and CoinQuest thanks Heritage for use of their photos. The silver coin in the photo is a 'mace' coin, not a tael, and the large gold coin is a pattern tael which sold for $29,900.

These are amazing coins.
