Wikipedia reports 'At the start of the Third Reich in 1933 there was a ceremonial handshake between President Paul von Hindenburg and the new Chancellor Adolf Hitler on 21 March 1933 in Potsdam's Garnisonkirche (Garrison Church). This symbolised a coalition of the military (Reichswehr) and Nazism.' These 2 and 5 reichsmark pieces commemorate this event.
Most of these coins have 21 Marz 1933 on the church side. Some 5 reichsmarks omit this inscription. Values for both styles are strongly dependent on condition. The one in the picture, from Westfalische Auktions, is in very good shape and commands a decent price tag. Most of these coins you see are pretty well worn.
Here are some typical catalog values for the coins with 21 Marz 1933 inscribed:
2 REICHSMARK
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $10
well preserved: $40
fully uncirculated: $100
5 REICHSMARK
worn: $10 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $15
well preserved: $50
fully uncirculated: $120
The values above apply to coins that have the 21 March date inscribed on the church. Coins with no inscription are worth about one-half the values shown above. Mint marks A, D, E, F, G, and J can appear beneath the church. They do not affect value. The 2 reichsmark coins are made of 0.161 troy ounces of silver and the 5 reichsmark of 0.402 ounces, so they can never be worth less than that.
See our Important Terminology page for a description of catalog value.
