The galloping horse is a good indicator for the old German State of Brunswick. The 1 pfennig coin in our picture was minted during the reign of Wilhelm in Brunswick 1831 to 1884. Two pfennig coins were also minted, and both 1 and 2 pfennig coins sometimes include the annotation SCHEIDE MUNZE, or 'fractional money.'
All dates and mint marks of these coins are approximately equal in value. This applies also the 1 and 2 pfennig denominations, which are also very close in catalog value. Here are some typical listings:
worn: $7 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $15
well preserved: $30
fully uncirculated: $80
Do you notice the slight orange color in certain parts of the coin in our picture? That is due to an old cleaning and it lowers the value of the coin. When a copper coin is harshly cleaned, it almost always turns a bright, un-natural orange color. This one was probably cleaned years and years ago, and exposure to the elements has re-toned the cleaned surfaces. If you see a coin like this, don't buy it for full price. It is a damaged coin and worth far less.
