Leopold was Archduke of Further Austria from 1623 to 1630. His likeness appears on several coins of the period, with the three-quarters bust and shield design on thalers and half thalers between 1625 and 1629.
The coin in our picture comes from H D Rauch in Vienna where it sold in a recent auction for 130 euros, about $170 US dollars. This gives a good idea of what these coins are worth.
CoinQuest thanks H D Rauch for use of their coin image.
The thaler and half thaler can be told apart by their diameter (see listings below). For a 10 kreuzer coin, which has similar devices and inscriptions, the '10' denomination is called out explicitly.
The coin catalogs give insight into how the value changes with the amount of wear.
10 KREUZER
worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $75
well preserved: $140
HALF THALER (36 mm diameter)
worn: $60 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $225
well preserved: $375
coins dated 1632 are slightly more common and catalog at $40 worn, $300 well preserved
THALER (43 mm diameter)
worn: $45 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $200
well preserved: $300
When coins are this old, catalog values become less important. Each coin stands on its own merits. A coin with strong appeal will bring higher values. Stains, spots, cleanings, nicks, and gouges lower value substantially.
