These big, bold silver coins come from Europe when Franz Joseph (FRANC IOS) the first was king (REX) of Austria (AVSTR) and Hungary (HVNG). They are made of 0.694 troy ounces of silver, and this gives even worn coins collector value due to precious metal content.
To compute the value of these coins, first find the Base Value (BV) by multiplying the current price of silver by the weight of silver in the coin. At the time of this writing, silver is selling for about $28.75 US dollars per troy ounce. So the BV is 28.75 x 0.694 = $20 US dollars. Tomorrow the price of silver will be different, so be sure to look it up on web sites such as kitco.com.
A worn coin will be worth Base Value. For coins with less wear, add the collector premium to the base value to get an approximate catalog value for the coin, as follows:
worn: BV
average circulated: BV + $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
well preserved: BV + $80
fully uncirculated: BV + $150
Once you have the catalog value, read our Terminology page to adjust it for actual buying and selling.
