Belgium 50 Centimes and 1 and 2 Francs 1866 to 1899

Coins from Belgium often carry inscriptions in Dutch and French. LEOPOLD II KONING DER BELGEN is Dutch (our primary picture), LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES is French (our secondary picture). Sometimes the inscription makes a difference in value.

This page applies to silver 50 centimes, 1 franc, and 2 franc coins with Leopold II and the lion/shield/crown reverse. Other similar coins were minted, but this page applies only to the ones that look like the pictures.

There is an interesting variety on the 2 franc coin. This is the kind of stuff that gets collector juices flowing. Look at the top of the crown on the reverse side. If you see a cross, the values above apply. But if no cross is present, then the values go up, about double. Cool, huh? This applies only to 2 franc coins dated 1866, 1867, adn 1868.
